Tim and I have recently started to trace Tim's family on his mother's side. We have put together some information on the Davis family but have rather come up against a brick wall. Susan Baines has helped to compile information on the Clapp's and Cox's.
Tim's father's father was Charles Cyril King
Clapp (the picture to the left is Cyril as a boy). The Clapp family came from
Chapel Allerton in Somerset and were mainly farmers. Click
here to see full details of the Clapp family.
Tim's Great Great Grandfather, Charles Clapp, was married to Harriet Spearing - but why did they need to elope to Switzerland to get married? Find out here. The Spearing family had a number of milling connections. Click here for details of the windmills that are connected to the Spearing family.
Tim's father's mother was Joyce Cox. There are a large number of Coxes in and around Yate, near Bristol, and they were landowners and farmers.
Tim's mother's father was Tom Wright. His father worked on the railways, but we have yet to trace the Wright family.
Tim's mother's mother was Mabel Davis. She was one of 13 children living in Birmingham. The family were split up after their mother died and the younger children including Tim's grandmother were sent to a childrens' home. She never knew who her elder siblings were. Mabel Davis' mother was Elizabeth Davis, who worked as a pen raiser doing the work shown in the picture to the right.

Eleanor's family has pretty much been traced by Susan and Stephen Baines. This was done before Eleanor got very interested in family history, and therefore information about her family will eventually be put onto this site, but not just yet.
Eleanor's father's father was Roger Holford Baines. He was a vicar, as was his father, but further back the family were Holt's and they were Whitby mariners and ship builders.
Stephen Baines, (Eleanor's father), has written the book: "The Yorkshire Mary Rose - The Ship General Carlton of Whitby". 'General Carlton' was a ship owned by a Holt relative of mine, which sank near Gdansk and was remarkably well preserved. A lot has been discovered about maritime history at that time due to the findings on this ship. The book goes through the events which lead to its sinking and re-discovery. It then traces the people, events and history that caused to the ship to be built and used.
Stephen Baines has also written two introduction and scene setting chapters for a book called "The General Carlton Shipwreck, 1785" (ISBN 978-83-924360-1-0), which was published in 2008. This is a more academic book going through the detail of the discoveries from the ship and their preservation. Click here to see Stephen Baines' webpage about the General Carlton and Whitby maritime history.
Eleanor's father's mother was Geraldine Mary Gordon Fisher. Her parents were missionaries in Africa (as were Geraldine and Roger).
Eleanor's mother's father was Jonas Webb. He was a chemical engineer, but the Webb family came from Cambridgeshire and were farmers.
Jonas Webb (pictured left) is Eleanor's Great Great Great Grandfather. He farmed at Church Farm Babraham in the early to mid 19th century and was a renouned breeder of southdown sheep.
Eleanor's mother's mother was Marjorie Clarke. Her family were from Canada, but her grandfather was officially black and was probably descended from a slave family in America.
