When John Holt was lost at sea, his widow Elizabeth married again.
She married Matthew Bains (born 1793, died 1869) on 30 April 1820.
Matthew was a wagonway wright and adopted Elizabeth's son John as his
own. John was therefore known as John Holt Baines. |

Matthew Baines was a railway superintendant. As a young man he
emigrated to New Zealand with a friend to set up a sheep farm. His
friend disappeared (probably to cash in on the Sydney gold rush), so
Matthew came back to England where he went on to marry Mary (who at the
time of Matthew's expidition was bemoaning what an old maid she was at
21!! |
Albert Baines married Mabel Burgess (born 24 March 1866, died 2
November 1952) on 14 September 1905 in Liverpool. They had the
following children:
- Roger Holford (born 1 April 1907, died 18 June 1999)

Roger Baines married Geraldine Gordon Fisher (born 1907,
died on 25 January 2006). They had the
following children:
- Richard (born 1940)

- Stephen (born May 1946)

Roger Baines met Geraldine while they were both missionaries in
Uganda in the 1920s. Roger was vicar of Harrogate while his
family were growing up and became a Canon. In the mid 1960s Roger and
Geraldine moved to Ashford Bowdler in Shropshire and lived there for
the rest of their lives. |
Stephen Baines married Susan Victoria Noel Webb (born December
1947) on 23 December 1971 in London. They had the following children:

- Philippa (born February 1978)
- Eleanor (born February 1978)

Stephen Baines met Susan while they were both training to become
teachers. Stephen taught all his life at various schools in and around
Colchester and ended up teaching at the Colchester Sixth Form
